Test Questions

The first thing that you are going to be asked when you begin your driving test is a series of Rules Of The Road questions. These questions (eighteen in total) will incorporate pictures of  Road Signs and also a number of general questions on the Rules Of The Road.   The following are 55 of the most common questions (and answers) asked, however any question regarding the rules of the road may be asked. It is in your own interest to spend a bit of time studying these questions as this is going to be the first impression you are going to make on the examiner.

ANSWERS

1. It divides the road and should only be crossed when safe to do so.

2. They lead up to a single or double continuous white line and should only be crossed in exceptional circumstances.

3. You may not cross the line/lines except in an emergency or to pass a vehicle traveling at less than 20kph or to gain access to land or premises.

4. You must obey the line nearest to you.

5. It marks the edge of the road where a hard shoulder is provided.

6. The hard shoulder is not an extra traffic lane and should only be used except in an emergency or by pedestrians and cyclists, however a vehicle may move in temporarily to allow a faster moving vehicle to overtake.

7. No parking during the hours posted.

8. No parking at any time.

9. A continuous white line flanked by a broken white line.

10. Regulatory, warning and information signs.

11. Red and white with black lettering and of circular, octagonal or inverted triangle shape.

12. Diamond shaped yellow signs with black lettering and a black border.

13. Brown or green with white lettering.

14. When the vehicle in front of you has signaled and taken up position for a right turn and you intend to go straight ahead or turn left. In slow moving traffic when traffic in the right hand lane is moving more slowly than in your lane. If you intend to turn left and have signaled this intention.

15. When meeting oncoming traffic, when driving close behind another vehicle, driving in areas where there is street lighting, 30 min after dawn and 30min before dusk, and when weather conditions have caused your visibility to be reduced or when using them will help others to see you.

16. Gardai, traffic wardens, school wardens, persons in charge of animals, and persons directing traffic at roadwork’s [stop and go man].

17. Motorways are designed to carry a high volume of traffic at higher speeds. Traffic traveling in each direction is separated by a central reservation. Motorways do not have any junctions, roundabouts, or crossroads like ordinary roads and traffic must join and leave the motorways using a slip road to the left.

18. Learner drivers, pedestrians and cyclists, animals, farm vehicles, vehicles which are not capable of a speed of 50kph or which have an engine capacity of less than 50cc, Invalid carriages, vehicles which do not have pneumatic tires.

19. You must not enter unless you can clear the box junction without stopping unless you are turning right and are being prevented from doing so by oncoming traffic. However even if turning right your exit road must also be clear.

20. Anywhere that parking is prohibited by law, on the brow of a hill, near a bend, within 5m of a junction, More than 18 inches (45cm) from the kerb, wholly or partly on the footway, opposite a continuous white line, near a pedestrian crossing, opposite from where another vehicle is parked if doing so would cause an obstruction or anywhere likely to cause an obstruction.

32. Far enough away to allow you to stop safely in an emergency, a gap of at least 1 meters per 2km of your speed may be sufficient in good dry driving conditions but this should be at least doubled if conditions are wet.

33. You should stay at least 2 seconds behind the vehicle in front and this can be judged using the 2-second rule.

34 .Pick a point on the road like a lamppost or road sign and just as the vehicle in front passes it say, "Only a fool breaks the 2 second rule". If you have passed the point yourself before you finish saying the quote then you are less than 2 seconds behind the vehicle and therefore to close.

35. No. You must display L-plates to the front and rear of your vehicle at all times until you pass a driving test.

36. The vehicle must be road worthy, have an NCT disc (if applicable), tax and insurance discs displayed and have   “L” plates Displayed to the front and rear. All indicator lights and brake lights must also be in working order.
