What do I need to start driving?
The first thing you will need is to take and pass your driver theory test. You will then require an eye examination this examination must be completed by an optician. You then present your test result, eyesight report, two passport photos, completed application form and the necessary fees to your local Motor Tax Office. Your Learner Permit will be posted out to you within one week and you are good to go.
When can I do my driving test?
Currently there are two answers to this question. 1. If your Learner Permit is dated prior to the 4th of April 2011 you must have held the Permit for more than six months before you can sit the test. Once the six month period has expired you may apply for and sit your test. 2. If your Learner Permit is dated after the 4th or April 2011 you must have held the Learner Permit for more than six months and have completed the Essential Driver Training (EDT) course with a registered Driving Instructor (ADI) before you can apply for your test.

Do testers have to fail a certain number of candidates to keep themselves in work?
No. Those who fail seem to console themselves with this myth.
Will the tester know how many times I have taken the test before?
To the best of my knowledge No, unless you get the same tester and he/she still remembers you!!!
Do I have to apply the handbrake every time I stop the car?
No. If you are only stopping very briefly in traffic or at a junction there is no need. (Remember testers advice "drive normally" and ask yourself would I put the handbrake on here if I were on my own) If you stop on a hill or are going to be stopped more than a few seconds I would advise you to apply it. “When a pause turns to a wait use the handbrake” Your car should never roll back.
Should I always apply the handbrake when stopped at a STOP sign so as to let the tester know that I saw the sign?
It is not necessary the same rules as above apply, however make certain the car has come to a full and total stop.
When driving should I keep a few KPH below the 50kph speed limit to be on the safe side?
Where the road and traffic conditions allow you should drive at the 50kph limit.
Should I adjust my rear view mirror in such a way as that it will be necessary for me to move my head in order to see in it?
No. Mirrors have adjustment in them so that the driver may use them without having to move his/her head. Excessive head turning can result in a MIRROR FAULT.
Will I have a better chance of passing if I take the test in a school of motoring car?
You will be tested on the driving and the car you use should not affect the outcome of the test. However, as you may notice 99% of all motoring school cars are small hatchbacks, Fiestas, Micras, Corsas Yaris etc. The reason for this is that they are easy to reverse and do the turnabout in, as there will be good vision through the rear windows and windscreen. They will also have power steering, which is a great help when performing the turnabout.
